D.N.R. Boaters Safety Course

Every year the officers of the Osceola Township Water Patrol along with Kettle Moraine Water Sports Associtaion, other volunteers and the Department of Natural Resources hold a Boater Safety Class to teach young kids and adults the laws, safety, and operation of all Boats and Personal Water Craft.
Four Classes on shore where officers teach from videos, books, and other fun activities, also Conservation Warden Douglas Bilgo comes and and goes over the State Boating Regulations. And then a final fifth day on the water in practical operation and testing. Upon completion of the test all who pass are awarded a embroidered patch and a tempory certificate signed by the instructors. Also the highest test score of the class wins a U.S. Coast guard approved life jacket, donated by either a local store or Chief Samens.

Course Objective:

To reduce the potential for boat accidents, injuries and fatalities; to reduce the potential for conflict between different types of boating activities and other resource users; and to promote safe, responsible, and ethical use of the environment and our resources.

Course Content:
  1. All about boats, classification of boats, hull designs, and motors.
  2. Legal requirements including registration and equipment requirements.
  3. Navigation rules, basic safety regulations, and waterway marking systems.
  4. Getting underway, preparation, loading, boarding, cruising, docking, anchoring, knots, trailering, courtesy, and maintenance.
  5. Boat accidents, emergency measures, aquatic safety, alcohol usage, visual distress signals, fire on board, and first aid.

Who is elgible to take a class

Anyone 10 years of age or older is eligible to take the class and receive a safety education completion certificate. The certificate does not become valid until the child reaches 12 years of age.
